All of the Cats

Here's something I did a few months ago for the Independent Publishing Resource Center (IPRC) in Portland. They needed a half-sheet sized catalog cover to promote classes and events offered in February and March of this year. To the surprise of no one who has skimmed through this blog, it features cats.

The Valentine's Day image was the front cover and the St. Patrick's Day cats occupied the back cover.

National Poetry Month

To celebrate the end of National Poetry Month, here is a line drawing of one of the all-time greats: Emily Dickinson.

This piece was published in the Winter 2014 edition of the Portland Review, along with a drawing of Edgar Allan Poe (which will show up on the sketch blog in the near future).

Pabst and Presidents!

It's been a bit since my last post, mostly because I was doing some last-minute illustration work on this guy:

 It was entered in a Pabst art contest here in Portland at the lovely Grand Central Bowling. The winner was determined by voters, so I was very fortunate to have many of my friends stop by and drop their tickets into my envelope - I won the contest and this image will be transformed into a billboard in Southeast Portland! How awesome is that?!

I'm excited that so many people will see my art! I'm going to brag about it like crazy, since it's not everyday that your artwork becomes a billboard (unless you work closely with a marketing department, I suppose).

So yay! Here are some images of this work in progress:

I should have taken some close-ups of the cans - there are many details packed on those cans. Once the billboard is up, I'll be sure to take more detailed photos!

Friday Afternoon Comics & More!

Hello dear readers!

I've been horrible at posting recently, and I apologize. I've been occupied with getting into the Ooligan Press Book Publishing Master's Program at Portland State University (woo!) and I spent last weekend at Stumptown Comics Fest (double woo!). I also had to deal with some other way less interesting and more stressful stuff.

Blah, blah, blah, enough about me - here's a comic!

This happened right outside my window the other night so I felt compelled to draw it. I like that the dude looks like Strong Sad from Homestar Runner. But Strong Sad probably wouldn't yell at a cat. Also, the cat was unharmed. I don't know what was going on but that cat was pissed.

DJ Ladle

DJ Ladel is "ladling out the hits!"

This is a dumb little sketch based on a dumb response I gave during a comedy game show I participated in last night.

My apologies for the lack of posts. I haven't fallen off the earth, but I've gotten really into learning Spanish recently. I also have a short attention span and I've been out of town for the past two weekends.

I pinky swear there will be some good stuff popping up here next week.

Week of Lincoln: Day Three

Abe Lincoln actually looked a lot like this. Who else would be able to free the slaves single handed-ly and wrestle a 7 foot bear at the same time? Damn straight.

Week of Lincoln: Day One

This week is Abraham Lincoln's birthday.

He is my favorite president ever, and sometimes I get bored and draw pictures of him.

I will attempt to post something Lincoln-related every day this week, because he was the man.

Lincoln is a total BAMF. Absolute fact.

I will never draw Lincoln without his stovepipe hat. It is the best type of hat.

Scribbly Doodles

My life has been a smidgen crazy recently. I'm at the beginning of a lot of great things, and I haven't had much time to draw as a result (I will be fixing that soon!). I found these creature doodles in a notepad and felt they warranted a post. I drew them last year during the before-school reading program I ran at an elementary school. We had a volunteer reader come in on Wednesday mornings, which gave me a bit of time to draw. Of course, the kids always wanted to see what I drew at the end of the session. Sometimes they tried to draw the same thing. It was pretty cute.

I have more of those early morning doodles stashed away, so I'll scan them in at some point.

I love the crazy-eyed vulture-looking guy at the bottom of the page.

This doodle makes me very happy. It is the most Quentin Blake-ish thing I've ever drawn. (Quentin Blake did the interior illustrations for the majority of Roald Dahl's books, for those of you who don't have an expansive knowledge of children's book illustrators).

These were drawn with some felt-tip pen I acquired at school. I think I pilfered a few of them from the supply cabinet because I really liked making lists and drawing with them.
